Six MORE Novels You Can Read in Science Class

You may have seen our popular post 6 Novels You Can Read in Science Class. Now we’ve added to this list! Here are 6 more novels that are tied to science in some way. You can use these as a read-aloud with your class or recommend them to students to read on their own. (They’d be great for fast finisher activities!)  Many of these are geared toward a middle school reading level but they have flexibility.

  1. Jackie’s Wild Seattle by Will Hobbs
    Shannon, 14, and her younger brother Cody spend a summer with their Uncle Neal at a wildlife center. They learn about rescuing seals, coyotes, and a variety of other animals. Their adventures will make you laugh and teach you about animals. This book is geared toward grades 5 – 8.
  2. Project Mulberry by Linda Sue Park
    When Julia’s mom suggests raising silkworms for a science fair project, she’s feels the idea is too Korean and not the typical American assignment. This book is geared toward grades 4 – 6.
  3. The Tale of the Swamp Rat by Carter Crocker
    This novel is written from the perspective of a wounded and orphaned rat. Surprisingly, he’s taken in by an alligator who takes him all around the world. Eventually, he has to learn his own way. This book is geared toward grades 4-8.
  4. Flush by Carl Hiassen
    Noah and Abbey suspect a local casino of dumping raw sewage into the harbor. This has affected swimming at beaches local to their Florida home. Noah is determined to prove what the casino is doing. This book is geared toward grades 5 – 8.

  5. Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer
    Follow Miranda’s journey to survive with her family in their sunroom after a catastrophic meteor hits the moon and traumatizes life across planet Earth. Natural disasters are taking place all around them: tsunamis, volcanic ash, and earthquakes are making everyone fear for their safety and ultimately, their lives. This book is geared toward grades 7 – 10.
  6. Stranded by Ben Mikaelsen
    When Koby was 8, she lost her foot in an accident. She doesn’t feel like she fits in at school and at home, her parents smother her. When she rescues two pilot whales, she begins to feel purpose in her life. She visits them every day and strikes a friendship with Dr. Michaels, a veterinarian. This book is geared toward grades 5-8.
