Rachel Carson and the Not-So-Silent Spring

DOWNLOAD THE RACHEL CARSON LITERACY ACTIVITY HERE

Rachel Carson was a pioneer for women in science. As a marine biologist and author, she used her platform to spread the word about the importance of conservation. Her book, Silent Spring, became an iconic exposé of the chemical pesticide industry. It was one of the first tools that educated the public on negative health effects of harmful toxins in our environment and led to new policies that better protect human health as well as the health of organisms in their natural habitats. While we love to honor Rachel Carson in the spring as we hear the sound of birds chirping, we can also celebrate her lasting impact year-round with this literacy activity. Allow your students to learn about the history and breakthroughs in environmental science and gain an appreciation for Rachel Carson’s legacy.
