It’s already almost a week into February and this year just seems to by zipping by so quickly! Schools all across the United States celebrate Black History Month in February. It’s so important for students from all backgrounds and ethnicities to understand and celebrate what the African-American community has accomplished in our country.

Set aside some class time this month to let your students learn from black scientists. But don’t spend tons of your own time creating lessons. We’ve done the work for you! Give your students access to this list of African American scientists. Then, print a class set of our Explore a Scientist graphic organizer and have your students get to work.

Need some fresh ideas for how to use this in your classroom? Here are a few:

Set aside an entire class period for your students to research multiple black men or women and their contribution to science.
Make this an on-going study throughout the month of February by having your students research the African-American scientists for 30 minutes every Friday.
Incorporate the graphic organizer into a presentation or group presentation. This way, they’re not only sharing what they learned, but they’re hearing about many scientists they didn’t get to research on their own!
Offer this as an activity for students who finish with classroom assignments early.
