In life science, we study animals, plants, fungi, protozoa, and bacteria…all living things on our planet! We investigate their composition, how they function, their relationships, how they obtain their nutrients, their environments, and their relationships to one another. For instance, animals need plants, plants need animals, and the cycle continues!
One of the most important aspects of living organisms is that they can adapt to their environment. An adaptation is defined as any trait or characteristic that benefits an organism in a way that leads to greater chances of survival or reproductive success. Basically, adaptations can ensure greater success of a species!
Today we’re showing you a remarkable example of an adaptation with a 60-Second Science video! Selaginella lepidophylla is a unique plant species that is sometimes called “the dinosaur plant” or “resurrection fern.” It dates back to the Mesozoic Era, meaning the species has existed on Earth for millions of years! It can also survive in a completely dry environment for decades because of its many unique adaptations. As soon as moisture is available, it will quickly take it in and uncurl into a thriving green plant within only a few hours!
