It’s so beneficial for students of any age to think about ways science is used outside of the classroom. Every educator faces the challenge of making curriculum relevant to “the real world.” How many times have you been asked, “Why does this matter?” or “When will I use this?” The beauty of science is that it’s used in our world all around us every single day and one of the best things you can allow them to do is explore careers that use science. Not all of your students will select a career in this field but your job is to show them the diversity. This lesson allows students to use the Internet to dive into the topic of meteorology.

The American Meteorological Society provides a wealth of information. Allow students to use the website as well as links within that page. (This does not include the menu positioned on the left side of the website.) Part of this assignment is to help students become more familiar with research. The questions will not always be in the same order that the answers can be found on the website. It’s important for them to learn how to find pertinent information on their own.

Below, you’ll find two variations you can use with students. The first is ideal for lower grades (5-8) or upper grades students who tend to need more direction. The second attachment will work perfectly for high school students or middle school students who have expressed an interest in meteorology. Or, you can use the two in conjunction to help students see the writing process transform from short, choppy information into a well-written paragraph.
