7 Apps for Science Teachers

Last week, we focused on classroom apps that can aid in your classroom procedures. This week it’s all about apps that are directly centered around science teachers. We’ve got everything from Common Core standards to trivia games to facts about the human body. With the use of these free apps, you’ve got 7 new ways to connect science content to your students!

  1. Next Generation Science Standards includes the standards for science from kindergarten through 12th grade. This is perfect for vertical planning. Similar to the CommonCore app featured last week, you can add notes within the standards. The top feature in this app is the way it allows you to connect to other subjects’ standards. It’s the ultimate in cross-curricular planning. (More cross-curricular ideas here.)
  2. Human Body is simply an app compiled of 1000 statements about the skeletal system, muscular system, nervous system, and beyond. It’s perfect to incorporate into games or to use as a time filler when you need to keep students focused for the last 3 minutes of class! Here’s an example: “The skin is constantly renewing itself from the bottom up, and takes 52-77 days to shed cells.” Another: “Your tongue is the only muscle in your body that is connected at just one end.”
  3. NASA is a must-have resource if you teach the solar system. With more than 25 categories all packed with mounds of textual information, it also includes interactive maps and and images. You can also stay up-to-date with NASA’s launch and landing schedule for upcoming missions and so much more.
  4. VideoScience by Science House is a never-ending collection of science experiments on video. You can search by category or just browse through the extensive library of experiments performed and explained by science teacher Dan Menelly. Most videos are 5 minutes or less and are the perfect way for the teacher to review the concept before diving into the experiment with the whole class.
  5. Journey North is an interactive app that allows students to experience seasonal changes instead of just reading about it. App users can view maps and track their own sightings for things such as the bald eagle, the gray whale, the hummingbird, the robin, or the monarch butterfly.
  6. Science Trivia compiles multiple-choice questions with an in-app timer. The questions are categorized with General Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Each category contains 20 levels that must be completed sequentially. You won’t find an easier way to help students review and this app can be used individually or as a whole-class experience.
  7. QuickElem provides color-coded periodic table diagrams. The views of the table are grouped by chemical categories, classes, representative elements according to valence electron configuration, and orbital blocks. Each element’s chemical properties are rapidly available. This app is perfect for students to download on their phone as they’re researching and becoming more familiar with the periodic table.RELATED: 60-SECOND SCIENCE VIDEOS AND LESSON PLANS
