10 Cool Review Strategies

It’s so easy to get into a routine and always do the exact same thing as a review strategy. You may know of tons of great strategies but actually implementing them is a different story. (We know, we’ve been there!) So we’ve compiled a list of quick and easy ways to check to see if your students understood the topic you just taught.

This list can be used a few different ways. You could allow each student to select any method they want. You could break the class into half (or thirds, or fourths…) and have one group respond with a tweet and the other group draw it out. Or maybe you just taught a great lesson and want your students to relate to their own life. Have them share their story. The possibilities are endless.

The link above is a printable version you can hand out to your students. If you just want some fresh review ideas, scan the list below.

  2. Summary: Write a 3-sentence summary about the topic covered today.
  3. Share your story: Describe a situation when today’s subject might be applicable to your life.
  4. 5 words only: Pick a topic and and list the 5 most important words you can think of related to that topic.
  5. Draw it out: Draw a simple three-step storyline to illustrate a topic you learned about today.
  6. Rate yourself: Rate your understanding of today’s topic on a scale of 1 to 10 and describe why you gave yourself that rating.
  7. Simile: Fill in the blank: What we learned about today is like ___________. Describe your answer.

  9. Related: Use three sentences to relate what you learned about today to a previously covered topic.
  10. Muddy moment: What is something that was confusing to you today. How can I help?

If you keep a classroom set of these on hand, it’ll be so easy to always have a fresh method of checking to see if your students understood that day’s content. (Bonus: you’re not always grading the same thing!)
